In this kit, the students build 2 interchangeable models to explore sustainable energy, a solar-powered plane and fan.
The first model is a plane with solar-powered engines. Incorporating a single solar panel and 2 solar motors with propellers, students can enjoy building and decorating their own airplane and then taking it outside to observe how the solar panel generates electricity for the airplane propellers.
The second model is a simple handheld fan, using the given solar panel and one of the solar motors.
Please note: the plane does not fly! This kit is a fun and interactive way for students to observe and understand solar power and by moving the plane in and out of areas of shade and direct sunshine, understand why the orientation of solar panels in relation to the sun is so important. It will also allow the students to think critically about the use of solar energy for transportation, and how they could come up with reliable renewable energy solutions in this field.
